What is a PIC ?
A Property Identification Code (PIC) is a unique number identifying your property. It is issued by the State Department. This is the same number as your tail tag number. The PIC is related to an individual property and the number can not be used on other properties you are associated with unless they are amalgamated under the one PIC.
What is an NLIS Ear tag for Cattle ?
NLIS approved ear tags have a unique number including the Property Identification Code (PIC) and are fitted with a microchip allowing them to be read by electronic readers. NLIS devices for cattle can be either an ear tag, or a rumen bolus/visual ear tag combination. The ear tag indicating a bolus is dark green. Ear tags come in two colours signifying when they should be used:
- White breeder tags – use these for livestock you have bred and that are still on your property.
- Orange post-breeder tags – use these for livestock you have purchased and that are not already identified with an NLIS device.
What are Sheep and goat devices for NLIS ?
NLIS devices for sheep and goats can be either a visual ear tag or an RFID ear tag. Once an NLIS device is attached, it should remain with the animal for life. Visual tags for sheep are coloured according to the year the animal was born. There are eight tag colours that rotate through a defined 8-year sequence. The 2011 colour for ear tags is green
Testing and field trials for NLIS ear tags
Identification devices must undergo a 3-year field trial. During this time, if the device meets performance criteria at prescribed intervals defined in the relevant standard, it may be awarded conditional accreditation. The conditional status must be marked clearly on the manufacturer's packaging. If the device continues to perform well throughout the 3-year field trial, it is awarded full accreditation.
